Todd Sucherman Masterclass

Earlier this week (Tuesday 12th March 2024) I attended Todd Sucherman’s Masterclass at Drummers Only in Glasgow. Todd is currently doing a UK run of these masterclasses after a run in the USA and Canada. Entry was £150 and the event was 3 hours from 6:30 - 9:30pm. Todd asked us not to film the event or to give away certain aspects of what happens, so it’s not ruined for anyone else. I’ll honour that agreement in this write up out of respect to Todd and to all other drummers who might attend his masterclass in the future.

If you don’t know who Todd is you should go check him out! He’s got lots of stuff out there on his personal YouTube channel and that he’s partnered with Drumeo to make. He also has 2 Methods and Mechanics Educational DVDs so go check out his website for any new things that come out down the line.

I drove straight to Drummers Only after finishing work for the day teaching down in Dumfries. I arrived just after 6pm and there were a few folk already there. The Drummers Only crew were there (Paul, Gordon & Rory) and we got a name tag once we entered. There were also supplied some snacks and drinks, I grabbed a 0% beer for a refreshment before we started! We had to bring our own practice pad, stand & sticks but chairs were provided.

Todd came out about 6:20pm and said he would just get started with a solo while we waited on the few remains people to complete the 35 total attendees. Apparently Glasgow was his first UK masterclass to sell out - in a week! I’m glad I grabbed my ticket as soon as the event was announced back in September. There was plenty of Scottish banter from the attendees regarding those who were running late…

We all got a chance to play (those who wanted) which brought up some topics to talk about and discuss. We also touched on things like performance anxiety - getting in your own head, technique, mechanics, musical applications and concepts. There was also a running theme of manifestation that reappeared throughout the evening, as well as some comedic relief.

Those that attended travelled from pretty far, I heard some people say Aberdeen and someone from Durham so that’s quite a trek! I saw the map Todd posted on his socials and there was a lack of north of England and Scotland so it’s understandable why it was so busy in Glasgow. Maybe next time the Drum Shop in Newcastle could be a stop on the tour, or even somewhere in Dumfries!

To round off my ramble on this evening, it was awesome. I’m always up for going to any drumming events. The last one I went to was also at Drummers Only - DRUM with Mike & Eddy LIVE back in October 2022. The drumming community is one of the tightest in the world and we need to keep it alive and thriving. If you can then you should try to;

Support your local drum shop.

Support live shows.

Support your friend’s band.

If you need any drum gear I recommend Drummers Only. If you use my affiliate link I receive a small kickback at no extra cost to you.
